Laser welding safety: PPE, regulations and best practices for safe operation

Laser welding has become one of the most efficient technologies for joining metals in modern manufacturing. Its precision, high processing speed, low heat input, and ease of operation have led an increasing number of manufacturers to integrate this technology into their production processes.

However, like any industrial manufacturing process, laser welding requires specific safety measures.

Unlike conventional welding processes, the primary hazard is not limited to high temperatures or molten metal spatter. Laser radiation itself can cause serious injury if appropriate protective equipment is not used or if established safety procedures are not followed.

The good news is that these risks can be effectively controlled through proper operator training, the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and compliance with applicable safety standards.

In this guide, we review the recommended PPE for industrial laser welding and the best practices for maintaining a safe working environment.

Why does laser welding require specific safety measures?

Industrial handheld laser welding systems are generally classified as Class 4 lasers, the highest laser hazard classification, requiring specific protective measures during operation.

Several hazards must be assessed before starting the welding process, including:

  • Direct exposure to the laser beam.
  • Reflected laser radiation from metallic surfaces.
  • Handling components at elevated temperatures.
  • Flying particles generated during certain applications.
  • Metal fumes produced during the welding process.

Each of these hazards requires specific preventive measures, making the correct use of appropriate PPE essential.

Recommended PPE for industrial laser welding

Laser safety eyewear: the most critical PPE

Laser safety glasses are the most important protective equipment during any laser welding operation.

Not all laser safety eyewear provides the same level of protection.

Safety glasses must be selected according to factors such as:

  • The laser wavelength.
  • The laser power.
  • The operating mode (continuous wave or pulsed).
  • The required protection level for the specific application.

In Europe, laser safety eyewear must comply with EN 207, the standard defining resistance requirements against laser radiation and the required protection levels.

For this reason, generic or uncertified safety glasses should never be used unless they are specifically certified for the laser system in operation.

Protective gloves

Although gloves do not protect against laser radiation, they are essential when handling hot workpieces and help reduce the risk of cuts and minor particle projections.

The appropriate glove depends on the application and the material being handled, but it should always provide sufficient dexterity for precise operation of the laser welding gun.

Appropriate protective clothing

Operators should wear long-sleeved industrial workwear made from materials suitable for industrial environments.

In addition to protecting against minor spatter and accidental contact with hot surfaces, appropriate clothing reduces skin exposure during welding operations.

Loose-fitting garments should also be avoided, as they may interfere with the operation of the equipment or increase workplace hazards.

Safety footwear

As with any industrial manufacturing process, certified safety footwear protects against falling components, tools, and materials.

Although it is not laser-specific protection, it forms an essential part of the recommended PPE for industrial environments.

Respiratory protection

Laser welding can generate metal fumes whose composition depends on the material being processed.

Whenever there is a risk of exposure, an appropriate fume extraction system should be used and, where required by the risk assessment, suitable respiratory protective equipment should also be provided.

Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) is generally the most effective solution for reducing fume concentration within the working area.

PPE alone is not enough: safety starts before welding begins

Using the correct PPE is essential, but operator protection depends on far more than personal protective equipment alone.

Manufacturers should also implement organizational and technical measures designed to minimize risk from the outset.

Key best practices include:

  • Providing comprehensive operator training before equipment use.
  • Clearly defining and marking the laser working area.
  • Preventing unauthorized personnel from entering the work zone during welding.
  • Regularly inspecting the condition of all PPE.
  • Maintaining the equipment according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Verifying the proper operation of fume extraction systems.

Together, these measures create a significantly safer working environment while reducing the likelihood of workplace incidents.

Applicable standards for laser welding safety

Industrial laser welding safety is governed by several European standards and regulations.

The most important include:

  • EN IEC 60825-1, covering laser product classification and general safety requirements.
  • EN ISO 11553-1, relating to the safety of laser processing machines used in industrial applications.
  • EN ISO 11553-2, specifically covering handheld laser processing equipment.
  • EN 207, specifying the performance requirements for laser protective eyewear.
  • Regulation (EU) 2016/425, governing personal protective equipment marketed within the European Union.

Compliance with these standards not only helps protect operators but also ensures the safe and compliant operation of laser equipment in industrial environments.

Conclusion

Laser welding safety does not depend on a single protective measure, but on the combination of equipment designed in compliance with applicable standards, properly trained operators, and the correct use of appropriate PPE.

Investing in safety means protecting people, ensuring production continuity, and taking full advantage of laser technology while maintaining the highest safety standards.

At LC Lasers, we believe that an industrial solution should deliver not only precision and productivity, but also a safe, reliable, and fully compliant working environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are laser safety glasses mandatory?

Yes. Whenever there is a risk of exposure to the laser beam or reflected laser radiation, certified laser safety eyewear is essential and must be appropriate for the laser wavelength and characteristics of the equipment being used.

Which standard must laser safety glasses comply with?

Laser protective eyewear used within Europe must comply with EN 207 and be suitable for the specific laser application.

Does laser welding generate fumes?

Yes. Like other welding processes, laser welding produces metal fumes whose composition depends on the material being welded.

Appropriate fume extraction systems should always be considered, together with any additional protective measures identified through the workplace risk assessment.

Is PPE alone sufficient?

No. PPE represents the final layer of protection and should always be complemented by operator training, safe working procedures, clearly designated laser work areas, regular equipment maintenance, and collective protective measures.
