Does laser cleaning damage metal or the surface?
Short answer: no, if it is used correctly. The laser removes rust, paint or grease and leaves the base metal intact. Damage only happens when the power or settings do not suit the part.
Why does the laser remove dirt but not metal?
Every material needs a different amount of energy to vaporise: its ablation threshold. Rust, paint and grease have a low threshold; metal has a higher one, and it also reflects much of the light.
If the machine works between those two thresholds, the laser removes the layer of dirt and stops acting once it reaches clean metal. There is also no contact: no abrasive to scratch and no chemicals to attack the surface.

| Method | Contact | Risk to the part |
|---|---|---|
| Laser cleaning | No | Minimal with the right settings |
| Sandblasting / shot blasting | Yes (abrasive) | Wear and change in roughness |
| Chemical cleaning | Yes | Chemical attack and waste |
| Brush or sanding | Yes | Scratches and material loss |

When can it damage the part?
- Too much energy or too many passes: the metal heats up and can change colour (the golden or bluish tint on stainless steel).
- Continuous-wave laser on delicate parts: the LC-CLEAN CW 1500W is very fast and cleans deep, ideal for structures and shipyards, but it heats more. For thin sheet or critical finishes, a pulsed laser such as the LC-CLEAN P 300W or P 500W is better.
- Sensitive materials: plastics, wood, stone or original paint can be cleaned, but always with prior tests.
How to clean without damaging the surface
- Choose the laser for the part: pulsed for precision, continuous for volume.
- Start with low energy and increase gradually.
- Test first on an area that is not visible.
- Move the head at a constant speed and stop when the metal is clean.
- Train the operator: most damage comes from wrong settings. We explain it in why training is needed for laser cleaning.

Where no damage is acceptable
- Injection moulds: cleaned without dismantling and without altering their texture or dimensions.
- Heritage: as at the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba or the Casa de la Vall.
- Before welding or painting: it leaves the surface clean without removing material.
Frequently asked questions
Does laser cleaning remove material?
With the right settings, only the contaminant.
Does it damage stainless steel?
Not with the right energy. With too much power, heat tint can appear.
Can aluminium be cleaned?
Yes, preferably with a pulsed laser and starting at low power.
